New supporter of Sharkoon!! hoorah! May 13, 2010 E. Reyes 25 out of 25 found this review helpful
This headset rocks! I definitely took a chance on these despite not having seen any previous reviews or ratings, but it was worth it. I wanted to test it out for a few weeks before writing a review. Also, this is my first Sharkoon product.
Along with the headset itself, it includes
- optical cable
- "sound control unit" (your little magic black box where all cables run to)
- adapters for PC (comes with 5.1 analog for those w/o pc optical), 360, ps3
- detachable boom mic (it does flex to your preference)
- power supply (single cord which splits off to power your SCU and headset separately) Ex.) you can still disconnect the power to the SCU and still have power running to the headset by itself. The power supply comes with swappable heads. I guess this is if you go out of the country and want to use their foreign outlets.
It took me a little bit of time to figure out all these adapters, settings, and wires (there are a lot of wires.)
The Sound Control Unit (SCU) is where your optical, power supply and 9-pin headset connector come together. You can also adjust the general volume here, but I usually just use the volume adjust attached the the headset cord. There is a 5.1 analog output as another option for those PC users without an optical option. With two 9-pin headset jacks, a second person with the same headset may also listen in. Two Dolby options include Dolby Digital and Pro Logic. There are two included settings called Time-Delay and Dynamic Range Control located on the SCU.
Both of these passages taken directly from the manual. Either setting can be turned on or off.
"Time-Delay - The Time-Delay function allows to define a time delay for the sound reproduction for each speaker. Thus a spacious playback of the audio signal can be achieved. Note that increasing the delay too much may cause unnatural results."
"Dynamic Range Control - Dynamic Range control limits the dynamic, decreasing the level differences between loud and quiet passages in the Dolby Digital 5.1 signal thus balancing the effect of loudness."
Other nice features include a volume adjuster which is attached the headset cord. The X-tatic logo on the headset AND also the attached volume adjuster light up. Looks good to me! The volume is indicated by the different colors lighted up on the volume adjuster - ranging from green (very low) to red (very high). The sound volume from each speaker can also be adjusted individually. So say you're sniping and you want to hear even more of the sounds behind you. You can "up" the volume on the rear speakers to do just that. Or you might be looking to get more "boom" from your sounds. You can increase the bass volume while keeping the other speakers at their current volume.
There is a switch to turn off your voice. You can't hear your own voice while speaking, but I prefer it that way. Voice volume from other people can also be adjusted independently from game volume. So when I hear a lobby full of annoying kids, I lower the voice volume and just "up" my awesome game volume. Bliss.
Comfort 5/5 - Took a night of gameplay to "break-in", so now it fits comfortably. Good padding so it sits well on your head. The ear cups can be tilted and also swivel to match your unique head shape (a BIG plus for me.) I can wear these 4-5 hours easy.
Sound 5/5 - Amazing! Playing MW2 and GOW2 is a whole new experience now! Sounds I never knew existed in these games gave me a whole new appreciation! Distant gunfire, rustling of bushes and grass around me, and even slight downpour can be heard. With that said, the 5.1 directionality will add a whole new dimension to your gameplay. For me, there is a clear distinction between if gunfire is coming from front, rear, front left, rear right, etc. Footsteps come in loud and clear. This keeps me more aware of my surroundings. Hurray for situational awareness!
Price 4/5 - It is quite the steep investment for me at $159.99, even with the free shipping from Amazon (love ya for that Amazon!) I did have to think twice before my purchase solely because the price. Now that I look back on it, it was the right move.
Overall, this headset definitely meets my expectations. It looks good and has some surprisingly cool features. Maybe if they could fix the amount of wires, but I guess that what it takes to work on the pc, 360, and ps3.
Good Hunting!
five stars is too much and four is just not fare July 25, 2010 kidd 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought those mainly to use with my ps3.Of course you must know that there is tons of wires.
Will i do have a huge head and these babes can fit nicely, with the most comfort i ever had with a headset.
As for setting up the manual provides you with every thing you need to know about." I never read manual's but this time OMG" So for the RTFM guys this is the only time it will really worth it. ;-)
sound quality is great but it took me some time to fine tune to get the best sound for my taste, you must note that these can never be compared to a proper sound system, tough they do the job quite nicely. In general i love the sound of the x-tatic but there is one thing that i don't,which is during different game's you will find your self doing some adjustment's for the sound channels -front,rear,center and sub- I even wondered why didn't I study some thing in sounds tech.but in time maybe i will figure out what are all those setting's for.-ie.time delay-
Let's talk about the games i tested so far,MW2 is the main reason i bought these and now there is a huge improvement in my game play.i can pick up the tinny noises now -need some work with my reaction time tough-now it's easy for me to detect my enemy's and when playing in relatively quite maps-no back ground noise-it seems like my life is lot easier than before-You must know what are you listening for to get great result's-.
Assassins Creed 2 just blow my mind with the sound's quality, there is sound's i did't know about.i can hear the crowds and pin point where they are from the roof top's with no sight at all, remember the bit when you go after a mugger and hunt him down? now i dont need to look for my map to catch him, even when he is out of my visual range.
And for red dead players there is A whole new game play exp. waiting for you with the x-tatic.
Enough about the sound quality you all get the idea.
Build quality is a huge plus for the sharkoons, maybe there is a thing or two i don't like about them, first there is the mic it self it feels like it's little bit short in length with a superb sound quality so it's nothing really, the other thing is the center in line control unit and the SCU unit materials feels some how cheep.
compared to the axpro the sharkoon has much better build quality for me.
The price tag: for me the price was a lot for some not so known brand - for my self at least -but know i can say that i'am very happy i have the x-tatic and can report that I am one happy x-tatic owner and will buy the upcoming headsets from this manufacturer what ever the price tag says.
my rating for this product is 9.3/10
Worth the money July 25, 2010 arrapa (Kansas City) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought these as a substitute for a surround sound system to go with my ps3. I didn't want to disturb the neighbors when I watched movies or played games.
Setup was pretty easy- adjusting the sound settings through the ps3, and plugging in everything. Yes there are a few wires, but it wasn't unmanageable or confusing. The headphone wire is long enough for me - I sit approximately 15 feet away from the ps3,
The sound is pretty good- I've watched The Hurt Locker, Transformers, and quite a few other movies that sounded excellent through these Sharkoons. Video games are even better- I played through Assassin's Creed 2, and both Uncharted games, and these headphones really enhance the whole experience. Overall, the sound is clear, gives you a sense of direction (the source of the sounds), and you pick up on subtle noises you would have missed before. Explosions and low sounds don't get lost in the mix, as there is some bass to the sound as well. Only a few times have I felt like the sound was bad (sounded muffled/tinny)- but I think it was more in the game than the headphones.
I haven't used the online communication or microphone features yet, so I can't comment on those.
The headphones are comfortable. They may be on the heavy side, but they are well padded, not too tight, and are adjustable. I haven't had any problems with neck pain, headaches, sweaty ears, or any of the stuff people complain about with similar headphones... and I've worn them for extended periods of time.
Lot of wires, but worth it July 21, 2010 S. Lemon (Seattle, wa) I was a little sceptical to buy these at first... there was only a single review and quite the cost investvent for gaming headphones. It was worth it.
I use these primary for gaming on the xbox360. The initial configuration seemed pretty daunting at first. There are a ton of options and quite a few different ways to hook these up, depending on what audio quality you want and/or can have. Once I got it hooked up I just slowly tweaked it.
I am not an audiophile, but I can tell the difference that these make. Source of sounds is easy to determine in game. They are extremely comfortable. They integrate with the xbox, the tv, the stereo, the PS3. There is even a plug straight into the unit for an xbox mic to controller cord.
I have a sleight complaint with the size of the mic, it is almost too small... it comes to the side of my mouth. It works great, but just feels a little weird off to the side like that.
All in all, love this product!
Wonderful Product August 28, 2010 heavyc I've had the Sharkoon X-Tatic True 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound Gaming Headset for about a month. This is my first gaming headset. So let me start off with it takes a few days getting use to. I wasn't use to all the sounds being next to my ear instead of across the room and the weight of the headset. If you've already had a gaming headset than those wouldn't be factors for you. The adjustable volume cord is a little clumsy getting to but comes with a clip so you can clip it anywhere I just forget to. lol. I haven't had any problems with the mic it actually picks me up clearly even when away from my mouth (so that i can eat and not ruin it). Its a great product no static, clear audio, you can separately adjust game and chat volumes.
Now when it comes to movies it wonderful all new experience for me. I'm not usually big on HDTV and Surround sound but this makes me want to get better equipment so i can really see what this thing does since I'm already beyond pleased with this product.
I'm a hardcore gamer. I spend hours upon hours upon hours playing video games each day. And this has greatly increased my skill. I can hear foot steps of people sneaking up behind me or to my left or above or below me. I can hear bombs being planted or defused. I can hear people spawning if I'm close enough. Even in single player games it does that extra push that brings you totally into the world of the game. I felt like I was the main character at times until my cell phone rings and breaks my concentration.
The only cons I have to this headset are that there are a few wires which took some getting use to since I was a wireless gamer until I got this headset and a new wired controller and the fact that the volume control is a few inches further away than I would of liked.
